Onion Curry is an easy side dish for Chapati. Since it only needs a handful of ingredients it hardly takes much time to make this dish.
Today is another special dish from Athamma’s mom, who used to make this dish when they were kids. Athamma has been telling me about this dish, which was normally done when they were short of time and wanted a quick dish for their Jowar rotis. It now served with chapathis, whereas during their childhood days, Athamma’s mom used to make with Jowar rotis.
I wanted to make this when I was planning to make the theme “Cooking with Onions”. Somehow I didn’t get around making it. So it surely suited my needs when I was asking Athamma for dishes that she makes from her mom. Athamma had made this once before but I didn’t get to taste it that time. So I asked Athamma to make this again.

Konda’s exams got over today, she was so excited about the exams finally getting over. Now the boys have school until the end of this month. Anyway, I need to find ways to keep them occupied.

Coming to the recipe, you can use as much of onions you want, as this gravy is made with just onions along with masala.












Onion Curry ~ Easy Side Dish for Chapati

This onion curry is simple and easy to make side dish for chapati. When you are short of ideas on what to make for a quick dinner, then this comes to aid.
We mostly dry the coconut and store it as copra powder, comes handy when you came side dishes like this.
So just pulse it along with garlic for a flavorsome dish.

What is used to spice this curry?

We use green chilies for the spice and for more flavour, we mostly have roasted coriander ground and stored. This gives a different flavour than the powder that’s ground in the mill.
Since it’s very easy to make, this hardly takes time to get cooked.

Instructions
  1. Cut the onions as juliennes.
  2. Grind the coconut and garlic into a fine powder. Since the coconut is dried, you will get a powder when you grind.
  3. Slice onions as juliennes and put it in water as you slice. This is just to wash and make it get cooked faster.
  4. Heat a nonstick pan with oil, add cumin seeds, then add sliced onions. Saute the onions. After sauteing it for 5 mins, add the slit green chilies, turmeric powder and salt.
  5. After 5 mins, add the tomatoes, coriander powder. Then add the coconut garlic powder. Saute well and add water as required.
  6. Bring to boil and simmer till everything is cooked. This takes about 7 - 10 mins.
  7. Switch off when the gravy thickens.
  8. Serve with Chapatis.

  1. That is surely an interesting dish…Sindhi's use lot of onion in their dishes, but not coconut.I can relate to the flavor of the dish…like the way you have thrown in those green chillies .I would pick and eat all of them.

  2. I don't think it was exactly this, but i remember eating an onion curry with Jowari roti in a traditional Bangalorean restaurant. I'm not too big on onions, but the combo was great. I love the looks of this curry!

  3. Tried it… tasted was different which i cant compare… but it was really good…. both my kids loved it.. Thanks alot…

    1. The recipe looks easy but i have few doubts. In the first pic which shows the sliced onions, it looks like they’ve been left in water. Do we need to leave them in water as we slice them? There is no mention of it in the recipe
      And in the third pic, the pan with the heated oil, it looks like you’ve added some cumin seeds to temper but there is no mention of cumin seeds in ingredients or recipe.

      1. Hi, looks like while updating the post, that step got missed out, thanks for pointing out. Yes we temper with cumins seeds. The sliced onions are added to water just to wash, thats how my mother in law handles onions as she tears very quickly and so she soaks onions in water as she slices them. It also helps in cooking the onions faster. thanks for dropping by..:)
