How to make Gujarati Dal ~ Simple and Easy Recipe

  • 1 cup Toor Dal
  • 2 tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 medium Tomato
  • 1 tsp Jaggery Powdered
  • 1" Ginger
  • 2 Green Chillies
  • 1/4 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • A Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Dates paste
  • 1 tsp Lemon Juice

For Tempering

  • 1 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tsp Cooking Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 2 Clove
  • 1" Cinnamon
  • A Little Hing
  • 1 Dry Red Chilli
  • Curry Leaves few


How to make Gujarati Dal

  • Pressure cook the toor dal with turmeric powder and enough water. Let it cool and then grind into a smooth paste.
  • Microwave peanuts in a cup of water for 5 mins, remove and keep it aside.
  • Heat cooking oil and ghee in pan. Add the mustard seeds. Next, add the clove, cinnamon, hing, red chilies and curry leaves.
  • When it sizzles, add the toor dal along with tomato, jaggery, chopped ginger, chopped green chili, red chili powder, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Add some water as required depending on the consistency.
  • Add dates paste, peanuts bring to boil and simmer for a few minutes. Switch off. Add the lemon juice.
  • Serve with Roti and Rice.


Since my family is not too much into sweet dals, I added very little jaggary and dates.
