Ingredients

  • 1/2 cups Split Yellow Dal / Moong Dal
  • 1/2 liter Milk
  • 3 tbsp Sugar
  • A Pinch Saffron Strands
  • 2 tbsp Oats
  • Handful Pistachios finely chopped
  • Handful Almond finely chopped

Instructions

  • Wash and soak the moong dal in enough water for 3 to 4 hours.
  • Drain the water and grind the dal to a smooth paste.
  • Heat milk in a nonstick pan/ thick bottom pan and bring it to a boil. Add the ground moong dal paste and whisk well.
  • Simmer and cook on low heat till the mixture thickens. Add sugar and mix well.
  • Cook the mixture, stirring continuously. Add saffron and mix well.
  • Cook for 15 minutes, stirring continuously, till the dal gets cooked.
  • Add oats and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes stirring continuously.
  • Finally, add the finely chopped nuts, cook for a couple of minutes.
  • Then switch off and transfer into a serving bowl. Garnish with pista and almond, cool, and serve.

Notes

If you don't cook the moong dal for a while, you might feel the raw taste when drinking the payasam.
It becomes thick porridge-like, so it tastes good when served chilled. Else microwave again and serve hot.
