Secret Ingredient Chocolate Mug Cake is an eggless microwave baked cake. This is the second dish for my theme with a secret ingredient and if I had to get my kids eat anything, it had to be chocolate. While I was planning on making cupcakes or muffin, this mug cake just happened. I was supposed to have baked this two days ago, somehow time just fly. Is it only me, or everybody feels days are simply disappearing?
It’s a nonstop rut from morning till night and I can’t wait to hit the bed. So the spare time I get to cook for the blog hardly gets noticed. Since the time I have been pondering over the ingredient I could mix, I thought about a cake that was baked with tomato soup. Since I am hardly a soup person, I don’t have anything stocked nor was I in a mood to make soup. Then I planned on adding cooked tomato paste. Finally, decided to just add tomato Puree.
I made this for Konda’s breakfast and she was so taken in with the doom the mug cake got. I always expect this to happen, yet my mug cake never comes up to this level. Only when we are short of time, the mug cake seem to rise so well! We made sure we spent 5 mins clicking the pictures. Konda was not expecting I would spring it on her like that. When I had offered here the Tres Leche Cake, she asked what secret ingredient it had. I told her that it was a different theme and not the secret ingredient theme. So she completely forgot and didn’t expect me to reveal anything.
She was in a hurry to leave for school and I made her quickly taste and carry the rest for her school break. She dug in and said it was too good and so chocolaty and nice. When I told her it had Tomato Puree, her shocked expression was hilarious. She couldn’t believe and said the cake didn’t taste that at all. Well, it had dark chocolate and obviously, that will mask everything else.
I also didn’t add any butter or oil. The tomato puree surely must have helped in rising so well. My mug cakes never rose so well in the past. I also had melted dark chocolate chips at the bottom, which made the whole experience so sinful! If you are into chocolate mug cakes, I would surely recommend you spending about 3 mins to get this done.

Secret Ingredient Chocolate Mug Cake
4 tbsp All Purpose Flour / Maida
5 tbsp Sugar
5 tbsp Milk
3 tbsp Cocoa Powder
1/8 tsp Baking Powder
1/8 tsp Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dark Chocolate Chip
1 tbsp Tomato Puree
In a Microwave safe mug, take the dark chocolate chip, MW for a minute.
Stir well, add the flour, cocoa powder, sugar and mix well.
Then add the tomato puree, milk and stir well.
Finally add the baking powder, baking soda and combine gently.
Microwave for a minute. Again MW for 30 secs.
Sprinkle icing sugar on top and serve.
Since the dark chocolate chips were melted first and are at the bottom, it comes out gooey finally when you reach the bottom.
Microwave cakes always need more moisture to get baked well and not turn dry. Since this mug cake had tomato puree, it was even moister.
