Sesame Seeds Chutney or Ellu Chutney is a healthy option you can make for your breakfast. We can use both white sesame seeds or black sesame seeds as per our choice.
Serve delicious til ki chutney that has a nutty taste as a side dish to your favorite idli/dosa recipe.

This sesame chutney is a wonderful side dish for different tiffin items. I paired it with Kuzhi Paniyaram. However, you can serve it with Rice, Idlis and Dosas as well.
I have other similar dishes you can try like this Kodava Sesame Seeds Chutney or the sesame seeds as in Gorikai Menaskai
We are on the S for the A to Z Indian Condiments.
Ingredients
To make this chutney, have all the ingredients ready. Dry roast and let it cool down before proceeding to make the chutnye.

To make this Sesame Seeds Chutney we need the following
Sesame Seeds - We can use either black or white sesame seeds. I have used white sesame for the chutney. It's your choice depending on what you have.
Coconut - Use either chopped or grated fresh coconut, it balances the mildly bitter sesame seeds taste.
Other Lentils - We can use urad dal and roasted peanuts to give body to the chutney. These are added in small quantities just to balance the final taste.
Chilies - I have used dried red chilies, you can try using green chilies as well. However, the dried chilies give a good aromatic taste to the chutney.
Tamarind - As with all south Indian chutneys, we use tamarind to give the required sourness. It adds a good taste to the chutney and helps in shelf life as well.
For tempering: Regular tempering ingredients like Curry leaves, Mustard seeds and Urad Dal are sauteed in oil to be added to the chutney.

Next, add the roasted sesame seeds along with dry red chilies and urad dal.
Pulse it first to make sure you powder it well.
Next, add water as required and grind to a fine paste.
Make sure all the ingredients are well combined.
Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl.

Tempering the Sesame Seeds Chutney
Heat a small pan with oil, and add curry leaves, mustard, and urad dal. Saute well.
When the mustard splutters, pour it over the chutney.
Serve this as a side dish for Idli/ Dosa of your choice.
I served this with Masala Kuzhi Paniyaram.
Substitutions & Variations
If you have only black sesame seeds, you can easily use them instead of white ones.
Similarly adding fresh coconut and peanuts is up to you. You can even add frozen grated coconut if you have it handy.
When you make this as a thick chutney you can serve it with rice to be enjoyed by mixing in it.
This pairs well with all tiffin dishes as well. I served it with Masala Kuzhi Paniyaram

Equipment
We need a pan to roast the ingredients. A mixer jar to grind the chutney.
In olden days, we used to use the stone grinder for making chutneys that ends up being so delicious.
Storage
If you make thick chutney, it will stay good when refrigerated for at least 2 to 3 days. You can remove the portion you want and make it thinner.
Expert Tips
Always ensure to roast the ingredients on low flame so that you won't char them. Allow to cool completely before grinding, else there is a tendency of sesame seeds letting out too much oil and turning bitter.

Sounds YUM! I always make with sesame seeds alone, adding coconut would add tons of flavor. I am going to try this for dinner.
