Chola Paniyaram or Jowar Kuzhipaniyaram is an appey or Kuzhipaniyaram made with Jowar flour. This is a nutritious dish and very apt for Diabetics. This Jowar Appey makes a filling and healthy meal option for a healthy diet.

It's amazing how you can stretch your mind to think of interesting, yet healthy dishes for all your meals. When I decided to take up the challenge of cooking up dishes for Diabetics, I knew one has to be very resourceful and imaginative. After all, you can't use most ingredients that you normally take for granted.

I am still in discussion with Dad in the next article on diabetes. Though I have the notes ready, I wanted to discuss them with him again before publishing them. The next article was more on managing diabetes and dietary aspects of the condition.

Coming to the dish, appeys or Kuli Panniyams are mostly done with Rice batter. Mostly it's done with the leftover batter, but I have known my Amma making it always with a fresh one. The seasoning adds all the essential kicks you might want for breakfast. Dipping it in a coconut chutney or groundnut chutney is enough to take you to heights! You can check out my Guntha Ponganalu if you want to know the regular way.

Since Athamma decided to avoid rice, Jowar flour seems the next best option. And yes making them as either Rotis or Dosas are so routine too. The appey pan was calling us and we couldn't ignore it right!

Since coconut chutney or groundnut chutney was not advised for a Diabetic, I made this quick Tomato Chutney and Mango Relish. Athamma enjoyed her breakfast so much and we have made this a regular at our home.

    Kuli Paniyaram

    Chola Paniyaram or Jowar Kuzhipaniyaram

    Makes : 16 appeys.

    Ingredients Needed:

    1 cup Jower Flour
    Salt to taste
    1/2 cup Onions
1 to 2 no Green Chilies
1 tsp Chana Dal / Bengal gram
    Handful Curry Leaves
    2 tsp Cooking Oil

    How to make Jowar Kuzhipaniyaram

Heat a pan with little oil, gently sauté the chopped onions, including all the other ingredients, except the jowar flour.
Take the jowar flour in a bowl, mix salt and slowly add water and mix well to get a dropping consistency.
Add the sauteed ingredients and mix well. Allow it to rest for 10 -15 minutes. This way it becomes a little softer when it's getting cooked.
Heat the appey pan, when it becomes hot, reduce the flame to medium.
Add a few drops of oil and pour a spoonful of the batter into each hole, drizzle a few drops of oil over the top. Cover with lid and cook for 2 -3 minutes.
Once it's done, flip to the other side and cook till it's done. It takes about 5 - 6 minutes for the entire batch to be done.

    Jower Appey

Serve this with your choice of relish, I served this appey with Quick Tomato Chutney and Quick Microwave Mango Relish.
