Peas Potato Masala Pulao | Matar Aloo Masala Pulao in Pressure Cooker

For the final dish under Kids Lunch Box Recipes, I have this delicious one pot meal, with fresh peas and potato. This is different from the Aloo Matar Ka Pulao that I have already made. What spice you add with onions and tomatoes, surely changes the taste of the final dish.
This makes a wonderful lunch box dish, as you get to do in just the pressure cooker and get it cooked. In fact this can be done in flat 20 mins time, if you have a stocked pantry always. This pulao uses regular Indian Spices and nothing more.
Lunch Box recipes for Kids is one of my favourite topic to work on. With my kids all carrying packed lunches, it becomes important you pack a balanced meal. Konda has improved a lot in her eating habits. She was very picky, somehow now she understands that I have too much to get done in the rush mornings, so she is fine with whatever I can manage. 
Boys are still very picky, it’s mostly like a customised menu all the time at home. Daddy was saying that I shouldn’t force feed and only make what they like to eat. What’s important is that they are happy with what they eat. I would listen to him, rather than struggle with the hard feeling that my boys don’t eat balanced food. It’s such an irony always right, as kids, we hardly eat healthy stuff and after growing older, stuff ourselves with healthy stuff when it doesn’t matter much!
Anyway even if they start eating something like this, is all fine with me!

Peas Potato Masala Pulao | Matar Aloo Masala Pulao

Ingredients Needed:

Rice – 1 cup
Ghee – 1 tsp
Oil – 1 tsp
Onion – 1 medium
Ginger Garlic Paste – 1/4 tsp
Tomato – 1 medium
Shelled Peas – 1/2 cup
Potatoes – 2 small
Green Chilies – 3 long
Mint Leaves handful
Coriander leaves handful
Garam Masala – 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste

Whole Spices:

Shahjeera – 1 tsp
Bay Leaf – 1
Clove – 2
Cinnamon – 2
Cardamom – 2
Star Anise – 1

How to make the Matar Aloo Masala Pulao

Wash and soak the rice for 15 mins.

Heat the ghee+oil in pressure cooker and add bay leaf, clove, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise. Saute for a min, then add the shahjeera. 
Saute for couple of minutes, then add onion juliennes, green chilies, Saute till onion slightly changes colour. Now add the ginger garlic paste.
Cook for 2 mins, then add the tomatoes, salt and turmeric. Simmer till the tomato turn mushy. 
Now add fresh peas and cubed potatoes (I had MW potato for 4 mins, however it’s not needed as this is pressure cooked)
Once the masala coats the aloo, add the mint leaves, coriander leaves. Cook on high. 
Next add the drained rice, 1 & 1/2 cups of water and cook on high, when it starts to boil, add the garam masala and cover with lid. 
Pressure cook for 3 whistles or till done. 

Serve with Raitha.


This is more masala types because of the whole spices like shahjeera and star anise being added. With tomatoes included this becomes more a stand alone rice dish and you really don’t need any side dish to be served.

  1. Valli, I'm currently going to through that dilemma (actually my MIL is making me feel it) that my son doesn't eat a balanced meal. I was happy with whatever he eats as long as he is happy and healthy. But after hearing, 'oh he doesn't eat curry and rice or oh you don't give him yogurt & rice, I'm feeling as if I'm not doing enough or doing something wrong 🙁
    Sorry for the rant, but I wish everyone is like your dad 🙂
    On another note, that aloo-matar rice looks very delicious.

  2. What difference it makes from the regular biriyani.To me it looks as good as biryani with the subtle aroma of whole spices.Have bookmarked your recipe.
