Stromboli is a stuffed bread made with either pizza dough or Italian bread dough, It is stuffed with various Italian Cheeses along with cold cuts or vegetables. This easy Stromboli in 35 mins can be ready for Pizza Party and is a delicious bread shaped like a long cylinder and baked.

Records say that a Stromboli was invented by Italian Americans in the United States in Philadelphia and very similar to a calzone. Stromboli usually does not contain tomato sauce and have all pizza ingredients. However, these days it is made with pizza ingredients and baked as a rolled pizza. Stromboli turns out perfect and is very easy to handle as it is rolled and baked.

What is the difference between a stromboli and a calzone?

A Stromboli and a calzone are almost similar. The shape of the Stromboli makes it different from a calzone. Make a Stromboli with a square/rectangle shape pizza dough, top with pizza ingredients. Stromboli is baked after rolling it into a tight log. While a calzone is made using a round pizza dough that is folded in half with filling before baking.

Stromboli is everything delicious about pizza and a calzone combined. The dough is a soft pillowy having a layer of tomatoes and different toppings. Finally, the cheese added makes sure the dough doesn't stick together.

How do you keep a stromboli from getting soggy?

Stromboli can end up soggy as it has heavy stuffing inside. So avoid making it soggy, you can spread an even layer of cheese with a thin layer of topping. Just have to make sure we don't overcrowd the stuffing. Stromboli surely makes a delicious meal on its own.

When I decided to make this version, I had to make with a dough that only requires very little preparation as I had other versions planned along with this one. That is possible with a dough that gets ready in 35 minutes. This is an easy No Rise Stromboli dough that can address your pizza craving in just about 35 minutes. I adapted it from here and made it as it would suit our taste.

Stromboli is part of the Pizza Party Platter that I planned for BM#116, Week 1 with four days of Platter. You can check what I had shared as part of Day 4 Platters for Elders on C4AS.

Ingredients Used to make this Easy Stromboli

When you are planning for a pizza party, you surely would need it easy to make a dough that rises quickly to the occasion. Pun intended!

This easy No Rise Stromboli Dough takes only about 30 to 40 mins of resting. In no time you have a dough turning into a delicious Stromboli.

I have used a pizza sauce as the layer with roasted vegetables along with loads of Mozzarella cheese and rolled into a roll.

Baking this only takes about 20 to 25 mins and you can always make this roll ahead and freeze it.

    Serving Suggestion:

You don't have to serve anything along with this Stromboli. While on a pizza platter, this one surely adds up the excitement!

    Ingredients

    Stromboli Dough

    • 2 & 1/4 cups All Purpose Flour start from 2 cups
    • 1 envelope Instant Yeast I used Fleischmann’s Pizza Yeast
    • 1.5 tsp Sugar
    • 3/4 tsp Salt
    • 2/3 cup Water warm
    • 3 tbsp Olive Oil

    Toppings used

    • 1/2 cup Marinara Sauce
    • 1/2 tsp Basil
    • 1/4 tsp Oregano
    • Red Chili flakes
    • 3/4 cups Mozzarella Cheese
    • 3/4 cups Parmesan Cheese
    • 3/4 cups Processed Cheese
    • 1 cup Roasted Vegetables (I used three different capsicums and onions)

    Instructions

    For the Stromboli Dough:

    • You can knead the dough in a food processor or in a bowl. I used my Kitchenaid and the work was done very quickly.
    • In a wide bowl or food processor, take the flour, undissolved yeast, sugar, and salt.
    • Add water and oil and mix together until well blended.
    • Gradually add flour, mixing in 1/2 cup at a time, until dough forms a ball. Add additional flour, if needed to handle but the dough should be slightly sticky.
    • Remove the dough from the bowl to a floured surface and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, for about 5 minutes.
    • Leave the dough in the bowl for 10 mins.
    • Preheat oven to 200 C. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • On a rolling sheet, dust well and take the dough and roll into a large rectangle, about 10 by 14 inches on the parchment paper.

    Assembling the Stromboli:

    • Roast the sliced vegetables and season with salt, red chili flakes, and keep it aside.
    • Spread the marinara sauce over the rolled out sheet, leaving 2 inches on the borders.
    • Top the sauce with the roasted vegetables, followed by adding the grated cheeses all over.
    • Brush the sides with water and start rolling up the stromboli lengthwise like a roll and pinch the edges to seal.
    • Brush the stromboli with a milk wash and gently make marks on the top with a shape serrated knife every 2 inches.
    • Sprinkle with parmesan and little garlic salt.
    • Bake for 15 to 25 minutes or until golden
    • Check at 15 minutes and cover with a foil at the end of baking if necessary to prevent excess cheese browning.
    • Remove and let it cool 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with extra marinara sauce if desired.

    Notes

You will have to adjust the amount of sauce and topping you are adding. An excess will make the stromboli soggy.
Baking time can vary depending on the stuffing you add. With just this sauce, cheese, and roasted vegetables, that I have mentioned, the stromboli can take about 15 to 20 minutes.
You can always check and bake again for 5 to 10 minutes more if required.
