Potato Salna is a delicious gravy served with Parottas in Tamil Nadu. Its made with ground spicy masala and can have vegetables added or served plain as well.

    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Salna is a thin spicy gravy made with the roasted and ground masala paste. It is served with parottas where the parottas are shredded and this thin gravy is poured over it to soak and enjoy the meal.

I already have a Vegetable Salna, and Egg Salna, here's a version with just potato as the vegetable used.

I served with chapati and the gravy is quite easy to make.  My boys have a tough time eating any side dish with chapatis, I decide to make such easy gravies where they don't get to pick out any vegetables added.

This Potato Salna is the second dish in week 1 of the BM#105 Everyday dishes for Rice / Roti.

    Handful Coriander Leaves
    2 tsp Cooking Oil
    Few Curry leaves

    How to make Potato Salna

Wash and slash the potatoes, Microwave for 5 to 6 mins.
Soak in water and peel the skin, cube into as small pieces.

    For Spice Paste:

Heat a nonstick pan and dry roast all the spices listed and allow to cool.
While the spices cool down, add a tsp of oil to the pan and saute the onions till brown, remove.
Similarly, cook tomatoes in the same pan until cooked and allow to cool down.
Grind the spice powders first and next add the cooled onions and tomatoes, adding enough water to make a smooth paste.

    For the gravy

Heat a nonstick pan, add the oil and bay leaf, ginger garlic paste and saute.
Next, add the ground paste, 2 to 3 cups water, curry leaves and bring to a boil.
Almost cook on high flame for 5 to 6 mins, simmer and add the turmeric powder, chili powder, salt, and coriander powder.
Finally, when the gravy is well cooked for about 10 mins, add the boiled potato and simmer for another 7 to 10 mins until the gravy thickens.

That potato salna looks absolutely delicious Valli. My MIL makes similar curries to go with both rice and roti, but I am not very familiar with South Indian style gravies. Bookmarked to try this very soon.
