Pizza Bread Rolls or Savory Cheesy Pizza Rolls are fun to make pizza buns that you can make with your kids as a weekend project. It’s a tear and share bread loaded with cheese, herbs, and any stuffing of your choice!

These Savory Pizza buns are perfect for your Pizza Parties and thats what I did too when I planned my Pizza party. I wanted to have something for the elders along with the Garden Fresh Pizza and this rolled-up pizza was just too perfect.

I have different pizza dough recipes that work well for different styles of pizzas. Since these are rolled and topped with cheese, I also wanted the dough to have some extra taste other than tasting just bread. So basically I made these tear 'n' share stuffed pizza buns with a different recipe.

    What are Pizza Buns?

What’s in a name you ask? Well, these can be called pizza rolls, pizza pinwheels, or a pizza bread roll. These are homemade from scratch and tastes great as everything is completely homemade, layered with pizza sauce, cheese, and your favourite toppings.

We roll these up like you would do a pizza stromboli, into a log. Slice them into 2" logs, and bake in an 8" cake pan. The dough rose so beautifully that it finally looks like a Rose. After the second rise is done, I topped it with more grated cheese, olive oil, and herbs. When it was getting baked, the whole house smelled like we were in pizza heaven!

    Pizza Bread Rolls

Is this bread or a roll?

Well when it comes to pizza, you can actually shape it how you like. When you bake a pizza in a regular pizza shape and form, it turns out either the thin crust or deep pan rectangular or square size flatbread. If you see this Pizza Mug, I am sure you will get an idea of how crazy we are!

However, with the same dough, the same filling you can get very creative and shape it as anything like rolls, buns, pinwheels, breaded loaf, individual mini pizza cups, and so on. This bread turns out more like cinnamon rolls which actually makes it look awesome. I used an 8-inch round pan to make these rolls, so you can see how tall bread you end up with.

    Cheesy Pizza Rolls

What other versions can we make with Pizza Bread Rolls?

Apart from the basic dough and the pizza filling I have shared today, there are so many different combinations like Alfredo sauce with chopped garlic, parmesan or mozzarella cheese, Pesto sauce with parmesan or mozzarella, Green or Red Salsa with Mexican cheese, and so on!

Step By Step Pictures for making the Pizza Bread Roll

How to Make Pizza Dough 1

To make the Pizza Dough for the Savory Cheesy Pizza Rolls

If using active yeast, add the warmed milk, salt, and sugar to a mixing bowl and whisk together. Next, add yeast. Leave it undisturbed for 10 minutes for the yeast is activate and forms bubbles.
If using instant yeast, you can add the oil and spices right away. Then begin mixing in 1/2 cup flour at a time.

How to Make Pizza Dough 2

If using a standing mixer, use the dough hook to knead the dough until elastic and no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl, about 5-7 minutes.
If kneading by hand, take the flour in a wide bowl, add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Once you get a dough, transfer it to the countertop and knead for 5-7 minutes. If it is sticky, dust and continue kneading.
Let the dough form into a ball. Place into a well-oiled wide bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for an hour or so.

    To make the Buns

Punch down the dough, dust your rolling sheet with flour and roll the dough out into a 1/2 inch thickness and 15-inch rectangle or circle length.
Spread pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border all around without sauce.
Save 1/2 cup of grated cheese and sprinkle the rest over the dough.
Next drizzle the olive oil, sprinkle with basil and pepper powder, red chili flakes.
Starting from the bottom, roll dough into a log, tucking in the filling as you go so that it does not escape the sides. Pinch the dough together at the seam to seal the rolls.
Flip over so that the pinched seam is facing down. Use a sharp knife to cut into 7 huge rolls, and place in greased 8-inch pan.
Brush melted butter on the top of the dough.
Sprinkle the grated cheese on top and some herbs.

Leave it inside the oven and proof again until the dough fills the pan. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes in a warm kitchen.
Preheat the oven to 200C. Bake for 15 to 20 mins or until the buns are browned on the outside.
Remove the bread from the oven. Let it rest in the pan over a wire rack for 10 minutes, and remove once done.

    • 1/2 cup Cheddar Cheese
    • 3 tbsp Unsalted Butter melted
    • Basil leaves to sprinkle (optional)
    • Red Chili Flakes

    Instructions

    To make the Pizza Dough

    • If using active yeast, then add the warmed milk, salt, and sugar to a mixing bowl and whisk together. Next, add yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes to make sure the yeast is activated and forming bubbles.
    • If using instant yeast, you can add the oil and spices right away. Then begin mixing in 1/2 cup flour at a time.
    • If using a standing mixer, use the dough hook to knead the dough until elastic and no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl, about 5-7 minutes.
    • If kneading by hand, take the flour in a wide bowl, add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. When a dough is formed, dust your hands, transfer it to the countertop and knead for 5-7 minutes.
    • Let the dough form into a ball. Place into a well-oiled wide bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let rise for an hour or so.

    To make the Buns

    • Punch down the dough, dust your rolling sheet with flour and roll the dough out into a 1/2 inch thickness and 15-inch rectangle or circle length.
    • Spread pizza sauce over the dough, leaving a 2-inch border all around without sauce.
    • Save 1/2 cup of grated cheese and sprinkle the rest over the dough.
    • Next drizzle the olive oil, sprinkle with basil and pepper powder, red chili flakes.
    • Starting from the bottom, roll dough into a log, tucking in the filling as you go so that it does not escape the sides. Pinch the dough together at the seam to seal the rolls.
    • Flip over so that the pinched seam is facing down. Use a sharp knife to cut into 7 huge rolls, and place in greased 8-inch pan.
    • Brush melted butter on the top of the dough.
    • Sprinkle the grated cheese on top and some herbs.
    • Leave it inside the oven and proof again until the dough fills the pan, about 30 to 60 minutes in a warm kitchen.
    • Preheat the oven to 200C and bake for 15 to 20 mins or until the buns are browned on the outside and cooked, yet soft, on the inside.
    • Remove the bread from the oven. Let it rest in the pan over a wire rack for 10 minutes, then gently remove the bread from the pan and cool on a wire rack.
    • Warm bread tastes excellent!

    Notes

If you have active dry yeast, then use 2 1/4 tsp Active Dry Yeast mixed in warm water and sugar.
If you are not making the pizza right away, you can make the dough some 24 to 48 hours before and store it in the fridge for 24-48 hours.
I used an 8-inch round pan to get a taller bread.
