Zapiekanka is a popular Polish open-face sandwich. They use half of a baguette or other long roll, topped with sautéed mushrooms, cheese. Furthermore, it can include on top, other ingredients, toasted until the cheese melts, and served with ketchup.

The word zapiekanka comes from zapiekac, which means "to bake," and is the Polish culinary term for a casserole. Plural for is referred as zapiekanki or zapiekanka (zah-peeyeh-KAHN-kah), for singular.

When it came to the turn of Z, I had Zeppole, another Popular Italian Street food. First of all, I wanted to make only savory street food, hence I certainly didn’t want to check out sweet options. So finally, when I read about these Polish open-faced sandwiches, I didn't look any further. French Bread Pizzas is the other name for these sandwiches.

Try this Zapiekanka ~ Polish Open-Faced Sandwich

First of all, while there are many versions of this zapiekanki sandwich, starting with French bread with toppings of sautéed mushrooms, cheese, and ketchup, there are Hawaiian-style zapiekanki with pineapple, Greek-style with olives and feta cheese, Italian style, and many more.

However, what certainly seems like making the open-faced sandwich authentic seems to be the thick drizzle of Polish ketchup across the top, no matter what cuisine the zapiekanka is trying to emulate. Hence, I certainly thought I might as well make my own version of Indian style.

This is was among the first dishes I made for the series and it was such a super duper hit with the kids. I used a long dinner roll and the topping was a mix of Konda’s favorite vegetables and I kept it minimum as I wanted everything to mix and nothing to overpower. Above all, Zapiekanka certainly is a filling bread to enjoy!

Finally, we come to the last dish in this A to Z International Street Foods series and I am so thrilled and sad that this is coming to an end. Everything has to come to an end and we begin yet again. The philosophies of life! If you are interested to know the Flatbread for Z, check this post.

Step By Step Pictures for making Zapiekanka

    How to make Zapiekanka 1

    Zapiekanka ~ Polish Open-Faced Sandwich

To make this Zapiekanka or the Polish Open-Faced Sandwich, I have used two Dinner rolls. Above all, since my kids like only onions and capsicum, I have only used these two.
Finally, we can roast the vegetables in butter along with seasoning till it gets done.

    How to make Zapiekanka 2

Finally, when we are ready to serve the sandwich, slit through the bread and apply the pizza sauce over it completely.
Now you can top it with fillings and add the grated cheese all over the bread.
Microwave for a minute, depending on how the cheese melts.
Garnish with thick tomato ketchup right away.

Valli, if given a chance I would have made it exactly like yours. Love the use of pizza sauce. I wanted to keep it close to the actual one and also the boys wanted the mushrooms, so I used them. Looks great and what a great set of recipes you have posted this Mega marathon and that too for 2 blogs!
