Mint Coriander Chutney or Green Chutney for Chaat is one of the basic chutneys or condiments served for chaats, sandwiches and as spreads. This chutney is simply called as green chutney or Hari chutney is a delicious dip for various Indian Dishes.

I have served this as a dip for Pakoras, Samosas, Stuffed Pooris, Stuffed Parathas, and different Indian Snacks as well. Today's version has fried gram as the thickening ingredient. In other versions, I use roasted peanut as well depending on what I serve

I serve this mint chutney for sandwiches, for chaat, for samosas, and just about anything. Serving this chutney with pooris and parathas takes the flatbread to a different level!

I featured this chutney for Sandwich Platter, where some of the sandwiches had this chutney spread. The other Green Chutney for Chats is made at home for Homemade Chaats.

This Mint Coriander Chutney uses onions and tomatoes and can be served as a side dish for tiffin.

    How to make Mint Chutney

Ingredients Used in making this Mint Chutney

This chutney uses more mint leaves as the flavour of mint enhances certain chaat dishes like Papdi Bada Chaat.

First of all, you can store this chutney for at least three to four days when refrigerated. Simply grind all ingredients except lemon juice. Finally, when you want to use the chutney, squeeze in lemon juice and use it as required.

Because this chutney is such a versatile chutney, I certainly have this stocked most times. Furthermore, as this chutney uses fresh herbs, it is so healthy as well.

Another way of using this chutney is as a mix for making easy and simple pulaos for kids' lunch boxes. I have also found that kids like variety in their box and this chutney pulao certainly makes it different.

Consequently, I have frozen this chutney and used it as cubes when needed. The chutney will probably turn a little pale.

    Ingredients

    Ingredients Needed for Mint Chutney

    • 1 cup Mint Leaves / Pudina
    • 1/2 cup Coriander Leaves
    • 3 clove Garlic
    • 3 inch Ginger
    • 2 tbsp Fried Gram Dal / Chutney Pappu
    • 3 no Green Chilli
    • 1/2 tsp Cumin Powder
    • 1 tsp Chaat Masala
    • 1/2 tsp Sugar
    • Salt to taste
    • A Pinch Kala Namak
    • A Pinch Asafoetida / Hing
    • 1/2 cup Water
    • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

    Instructions

    • Wash and drain the herbs.
    • Take the chopped leaves in a mixer and add the garlic, ginger, and green chilies.
    • Pulse for a couple of times. Next add the fried gram, cumin powder, chaat masala, sugar, Kala namak, salt, and hing.
    • Blend it again and add water as required to get a smooth paste.
    • When the chutney is smooth, transfer to a bowl, squeeze in lemon juice, mix well.
    • Serve this for chaats and sandwich spread and as a side for snacks.

    Notes

I have made this with roasted peanuts and it becomes a thick green chutney that you can use as a spread on sandwiches.
You can increase the proportion of leaves used as well. Since I was serving with chaat that required mint chutney, I added more mint leaves.

This simple chutney is so versatile! I haven’t thought about using these in Pulao, but it’s a great idea. Will keep that in mind if I make a big batch of this chutney!

Green chutney is must to have condiment and comes so handy for different chaats, sandwiches, etc. I never add fried gram while making green chutney. Will try your version next time.
