Eerulli Chitranna is an interesting version of seasoned rice made with onions and spices. This is an easy dish to make from Karnataka.

Similar to the Lemon Rice recipe from Karnataka, this Onion Chitranna is a simple and easy dish to make. We can even make it with leftover rice. Almost all versions of Lemon rice made across the South Indian States is the same. I have a version of Lemon Rice we make at home.

Apart from these, I have also made Yellina Chitranna, Samai Elumichai Sadam, Lemon Sevai

I came to know about this dish when I was searching for something else when I came about this word of Eerulli to refer to onions. I know we call it Ullipaya, Errakedda in Telugu, and it didn't strike me to check what it's called in other languages.

Anyway, I read that there is a dish called Eerulli Chitranna that's made in Karnataka and that was my dish! I searched and came up with many different dishes that were not related to this, though this was more like it.

Eerulli Chitranna is a simple form of seasoning steamed rice with chilies and other dals to make it a little more interesting. I made it for our lunch to be paired with a kootu and it was a good satisfying meal.

Eerulli Chitranna is my pick for E in the AtoZ Biryani/Pulao/Khichdi Festival that's happening for the April Mega Marathon, where I have opted to make 26 Rice dishes. If you are interested to know what I am doing for E in C4AS, go ahead check it out!

We can make this Chitranna with leftover rice as well. In that case, microwave the rice or steam it again to heat the rice. Spread on a plate before proceeding to cook.

If you are going to use fresh rice, then wash and soak the rice. Cook in your regular method. When you are ready to make the Rice, make sure you spread the rice for it to cool down.
Heat a kadai with oil, temper with mustard, urad dal, chana dal, peanuts, cashew nuts, curry leaves, and green chilies. Combine everything well.
Now add the finely chopped onions and saute till it gets cooked.
Add turmeric powder, mix well and then add cooked rice.
Combine and make sure the rice gets coated well.
    Serve with any side dish.

Thiis was made just yesterday at my home. Though I make it rarely, I know onions add a lot of flavor to the simple lemon rice.

This is such a great find Valli. I didn't know about this but sounds like a cross between variety rice and a simple pulao without the spices. Looks so yum.

Very flavorful, right? Growing up, this was the rice my mom used to make with leftover rice as a breakfast. Those days we never cringed at eating flavored rice for breakfast. Try feeding this to the kids now and we see a host of emotions and dialogues 🙂

I would never be able to come with such names :-). This is similar to the tadka rice which we do, but with the addition of onions. A good way to add some flavour and crunch to the recipe.
