Mumbai Masala Aloo Cheese Sandwich is popular street food from the city of Mumbai. These sandwiches are extra delicious as they have the special Sandwich Masala sprinkled over them.

When I decided to make a Sandwich platter, I decided to go with what Vaishali had shared a while ago for one of the BMs. The essential spice powder for the sandwiches is Sandwich Masala. Overall, we loved sprinkling that masala on all the sandwiches I made that day.

This platter was the second one in a row and the kids surely had a field day. The day I made these sandwiches for dinner, I had my aunt visiting us. She simply loved all the variety I made that day, she even took notes to make these later.

One of the things I have done differently from all these years was the fact that I started watching YouTube videos on different food scenes.

However, when I had ample time on hand, was so bored, I ended up watching loads of it and the inspiration for many recipes came from the endless videos I watched. I can’t pinpoint one source, however, it helped me understand what goes into the street food sandwiches.

So for day 2 of Platters in the Thalis & Platters, I have Mumbai Masala Aloo Cheese Sandwich as part of the Sandwich Platter that was made. I have already shared Grilled Potato Cheese Sandwich apart from the Sandwich Masala that was made. With this Thalis & Platter theme, I have loads of dishes in drafts that I was forced to share some of the recipes ahead of time.

For Day 2 Platters for Elders, you can check what it is in C4AS.

    Making the Filling

To make the filling, begin by washing and pressure cooking the potatoes until soft.
Alternatively, I microwave the potatoes if it is small in number. You simply have to slash over the top and microwave for 7 mins depending on how many you microwave.
Let the potatoes cool down a bit. If you soak it in water, it becomes cool faster.
Peel the outer skin and using a potato masher, mash it well. Keep it aside until making the filling.
Heat butter in a nonstick pan.
    Add cumin seeds and asafoetida.
Once the cumin crackles, add ginger garlic paste
Saute well and add the finely chopped green chilies.
Now add the mashed potato along with salt and turmeric powder.
    Combine well and remove.

    Making the sandwich

    Apply butter to bread slices.
One one side spread a generous layer of green chutney. Layer the sliced onions, tomatoes.
Sprinkle the sandwich masala over the sliced veggies.
On the other bread slice, spread the potato filling and place the cheese slice.
Sprinkle seasonings over the stuffing and press the bread together and toast it in a handheld toaster on the stovetop.
Alternatively, you can also toast on a griddle or a griller.

I should make the sandwich masala powder. I just saw the recipe the other day. I am sure it can change the taste profile of any sandwich. Love this variation of aloo cheese sandwich.

One of my absolute favourite of all times. Must and specially when done in a handheld toaster. Though we make it at home, we enjoy this street side every time we visit India. You have made it so nicely.
